    Goddess Brahmacharini is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. The 2nd day of Navratri is dedicated to worship of Goddess Brahmacharini - the 2nd form of NavDurga. She gives eternal bliss by knowledge of the Supreme Self. Brahmacharini is also known as Tapascharini, Aparna and Uma. Brahma means " the sacred knowledge". charini is the feminine version of one who is a charya which means "occupation with, engaging, proceeding, behaviour, conduct, to follow, moving in, going after". The word brahmacharini in Vedic texts means a female who pursues the sacred religious knowledge.It is also the name of the second aspect of the goddess Durga (Parvati). The goddess is worshipped on the second day of Navratri (the nine divine nights of Navadurga).


    The goddess Brahmacharini wears white clothes, holds a japa mala (rosary) in her right hand and Kamandal, a water utensil in her left hand. The form of Goddess Brahmacharini signifies love, loyalty, wisdom, and knowledge. The facade of Maa Brahmacharini symbolizes simplicity. She holds a rosary in one hand and a Kamandal in other. Maa Brahmacharini, the word “Brahm” refers to Tapa and her name means -the one who performs Tapa. Goddess holds a mala in her right hand and kamandal in her left. She is always represented as barefooted.During Her penance She spent a 1000 years on a diet of fruits and flowers and another 100 years on a diet of vegetables. She also slept on the floor during the entire duration. She used to stay in open spaces regardless of the extreme climates. It is said that She was on a diet of Bilva leaves for about 3000 years while praying to Lord Shiva. Soon She gave up food and water but continued Her penance. After She quit eating Bilva leaves She was called Aparna. She immolated Herself after wishing for a father who would respect Her husband Lord Shiva.She followed extreme penance to get Shiva as Her husband and followed severe austerity because of which She is called Brahmacharini.

Goddess Brahmacharini is believed to bestow her devotees with wisdom and knowledge.
